Jason Ritchie is a family man, general contractor and owner of Handi Habitats, a nationwide accessible construction firm. He works with hospitals and those with physical challenges to live in safe and accessible homes. Jason was the Democratic Congressional nominee for the 8th District in the 2014 elections and is currently campaigning for the seat in the 2016 election. Jason was recently appointed by Governor Inslee to serve on the Washington State Independent Living Council. He and his wife of 16 years, Amy, have two children and live in Issaquah. Jason has degrees in History and Political Science from the University of Michigan and holds a Master’s Degree in History from Eastern Michigan University.
Jason’s construction business, Handi Habitats, grew out of a challenging time. When Jason’s father suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed, Jason left his teaching position to help remodel his father’s home to make it accessible so his father could continue to live independently. Jason soon realized his father’s needs were shared by many others. Over the years, Jason built that knowledge and experience into a business that serves others with physical challenges and helps injured workers, Veterans, and older Americans live safely and independently at home.
The experience of building a business that, not only creates living wage American jobs, but serves the public, gives Jason a unique perspective from which to advocate for his constituents in Congress. With hands-on job creation experience, Jason has a deep understanding of the struggle facing so many American families. Jason and his employees experienced first-hand the devastating impacts caused by Rep. Reichert’s cavalier, lock-step votes with John Boehner and the GOP leadership. Thousands of small businesses like Jason’s came to a standstill in 2013 when Congress abandoned the citizens they were elected to serve.
Jason ran a solid campaign in 2014 and has committed early to a win in 2016. Jason believes it is essential to bring Democratic leadership back to Congress. Jason will carry middle class values and his strong work ethic to Congress. Jason is uniquely qualified to be the next member of Congress from Washington’s 8th Congressional District.
